The Owl is a Extreme Threat entity of the Animal species.A large, neutral avian entity that can appear at night instead of The Deer. It has a unique 'don't move' mechanic that can cause it to become hostile.

Behavior & Characteristics

Spawn locations:

  • The ForestAt night, when active

Combat abilities:

Drops on flee:

  • Feather(0-1x)Chance to drop if it flies away peacefully (not hostile). Formerly a more common drop.

Special interactions:

  • Features a 'Red Eyes' mechanic: an eye icon appears, turning red if players move. If it turns fully red, The Owl becomes hostile.
  • If the eyes do not turn fully red after a time, it flies away peacefully.
  • Can be stunned by light sources like The Deer when hostile.
  • Has a chance to spawn Wolves nearby to trick players into moving.

Spawn Mechanics

  • Has a chance to appear at the beginning of the night, announced by a cutscene and the message 'The Owl has woken up'.
  • If The Owl is active, The Deer will not spawn (unless it is a Cultist Attack night).
  • Spawns in The Forest and Snow Biome at night.
  • Seems to stop appearing after Day 99.

Lore & Background

  • The Owl is currently the only entity in the game that is capable of scaring The Deer away.
  • It is faster than The Deer.
  • The Owl and the Mammoth are the only neutral entities in the game.
  • Its jumpscare sound effect is the same as The Deer's.
  • Might be inspired by the myth Kikiyaon or the Owlman.

Survival Tips

You can stand still while killing off any incoming wolves, as swinging weapons does not alert the owl.

Can be stunned or get stuck in the same ways as The Deer when it's hostile.

The night on which The Owl will wake up is randomized.
